Obituary for MARY E BALCH WOOD

Obituary

Mary E. Balch was born near Greenville Ill., March 13, 1857, and came to Kansas with her parents in 1864, locating near Edgerton, Kan., where she grew to young womanhood. She taught several successful terms of school in Johnson and Miami counties. She was married to W.L. Wood December 20, 1882. They settled on a farm south of Louisburg, Kan., which was her home until her death which occured at 7:30 p.m. September 16, 1907. She was the mother of five children--Juana, James, Ford, and Irma Grace, who with their father survive the mother. Richard Floyd died in infancy.

Mrs. Wood was of a family of nine children--five boys and four girls--J.C. Balch, Ferndale, Wash.; C.C. and H.A. Balch and Mrs. Maggie Evans, Wellsville, Kan.; C.J. Balch, Goldfield, Nev.; Henry A. Balch, Syracuse, Kan.; and Mrs. J.C. Nelson, Postle, Okla. Her death is the first break in the family.

The fueral [sic] service[s] were held from the home at 3 p.m., Tuesday, September 17, conducted by Rev. Chattin, pastor of the M.E. church of Drexel, Mo. She was a kind and loving mother, a faithful and devoted wife and a true friend. Mrs. Wood united with the M.E. church ot [sic] Bellview in December, 1904. and lived a faithful christian life. There were many beautiful floral offerings, and a large attendance at the funeral.
